London Bridges

Southwark Bridge in the foreground & Tower Bridge in the background. Taken from Millenium Bridge. Tower Bridge (1894) - London's most famous bridge, a Victorian Neo-Gothic bascule (drawbridge) and suspension bridge. It features two towers and high-level walkways (now with a glass floor) and was originally powered by steam hydraulics. It opens regularly for river traffic and is a vital road and pedestrian link. Southwark Bridge (1921) is the second structure on this site. It is a functional steel five-arch road bridge linking the City of London with Southwark. Its design is simpler than its neighbours and was chosen to align its piers with other bridges for easier river navigation. Millennium Bridge (2000) is a modern, pedestrian-only, stressed ribbon suspension bridge. It links St Paul's Cathedral and the Tate Modern. It briefly closed after opening due to unexpected sideways swaying, earning the moniker "The Wobbly Bridge," but was fixed with dampers.
