What the Brass Remembered
What the Brass Remembered is an AI-generated artwork in the manner of a late-1920s Art Deco poster; it was not made by lithography or by hand. It honours the writing-and-drawing automaton attributed to Henri Maillardet and built around 1800, whose memory is stored in brass cams: four drawings and three poems, two in French and one in English. In 1928 the fire-damaged machine was donated to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia; its donors believed Johann Maelzel had made it. A museum mechanic restored it without plans, and when it ran again it ended a poem with the words "Ecrit par L'Automate de Maillardet" ("Written by the Automaton of Maillardet"). The machine had kept its maker's name. This image imagines the hushed moment before that line, pen raised above a blank sheet.
